Description
Summary:001-0020-001 SPANISH RELIEF COMMITTEE under the auspices of the STANDING JOINT COMMITTEE OF INDUSTRIAL WOMEN'S ORGANISATIONS The above Committee was set up to provide knitted garments of every description for the workers of Spain who are suffering such terrible hardships as a result of the brutal and prolonged attack upon their constitutionally elected Government. The need is great. From the outset of the rebellion, the Government has had to look after thousands of homeless children in Madrid. Then as the rebels advanced in the South-East and captured one centre after another, thousands of women and children whose husbands had been killed in the fighting or shot by the rebels, poured into Madrid. Many weeks ago there were 40,000 homeless children in Madrid alone. The barbarous air attack on the civilian population has added daily to the number of homeless families and children who have to be cared for. Efforts are being made to evacuate the civil population, but whether in Madrid or in the centres to which they are taken, the plight of these people is terrible and the need for clothing is urgent. The Committee is concentrating on the provision of new knitted garments. Up to the present we have approached working women's organisations - Co-operative, Trade Union and Labour - and have met with a ready response. We have received many hundreds of knitted garments as well as subscriptions for the purchase of wool, which is being knitted by work parties which have been organised throughout the country. Now we are asking sympathetic friends to help us in our work, either by sending new knitted garments (men's sweaters and pullovers, women's vests and cardigans, and children's garments of all kinds are specially needed), or by sending a donation for the purchase of wool. 292/946/1/20
