Description
Summary:001-0028-001 Issued by the National Council of Labour, Transport House, Smith Square, London, S.W.I. 28. 6. 44 RELEASED FOR THURSDAY MORNING PAPERS RELATIONS WITH SPAIN The National Council of Labour views with misgiving the Prime Minister's recent "kindly words" regarding the Spanish Government. In dissociating itself from these observations, it recalls those tragic years when the Spanish people were engaged in a bloody struggle in defence of their constitutional rights and liberties against military rebels under the leadership of General Franco, who, with the aid of the German and Italian dictators, threw the Spanish people back into physical, intellectual, and political servitude. Guernica was the first experiment of the Luftwaffe in the aerial bombardment of civilian populations. Having tested their weapons upon the bodies and souls of the Spanish people, Mussolini and Hitler set out to conquer new worlds through the devastation and enslavement of Europe. Mussolini has been ignominiously crushed and repudiated by his people. The armies of liberation are now closing in from the East, West, and South for the liberation of Europe, and the destruction of the German military machine. In these auspicious days the British Labour Movement sends fraternal greetings to their friends in Spain and expresses the fervent hope that the heroism of the Spanish Republicans will soon be rewarded by a great act of democratic self-liberation which will establish Spain as a peace-loving member of the community of free peoples and strengthen the bonds of friendship in peace and prosperity between the Spanish and British peoples.
