Description
Summary:001-0182-006 When, some fifty years ago, the first class-conscious workers organised themselves in a National Federation, Spain, like most other countries at this time, had a political, social and economic system under which the workers had no rights and no liberty. The life of the workers was a hell; from birth, the child of working class parents had to suffer the severest privations. From his earliest years, he knew the direst suffering and misery. No joy softened his lot. The great mass of the proletariat were not even conscious of their degradation. It was the work of the pioneers of the T.U. Movement in Spain - remarkable for their courage, their steadfastness and their self-sacrifice - who created the U.G.T., to awaken the consciousness of the workers, to organise their struggle for emancipation and directed their efforts towards the ever-increasing success and towards the victory of these later years. The history of these 50 years of struggle would be too long to describe here, the dramatic episodes too numerous to quote. But these last years have seen in Spain the expansion of this self-sacrifice and this terrible and heroic struggle, and the untiring efforts of the U.G.T., now become strong, powerful and conscious of its responsibilities and of the possibilities of development.
