Description
Summary:037-0038-001 HVT/FC/EW/27 Secretary's Mr. J.C. Jones, 1, Jeffreys Road, S.W.4. 22nd September, 1937. Dear Mr. Jones, BASQUE CHILDREN. As promised in the previous letter from this office, I am appending information which I hope will be useful to you. The children are now in homes up and down the country, all of them having been evacuated from the Southampton Camp. No individual adoptions have been permitted and they are in groups of between 25 and 100 in the various homes. To the best of my knowledge there is no group less than 25. There are, of course, a few people who are pressing for the immediate return of the children, but the National Committee, whilst it is not desirous of maintaining the responsibility any longer than is necessary, is anxious that all applications for the return of the children should be verified. There is a further point, that the parents of a very large number of the children are in France and the difficulties of repatriation under these circumstances will be obvious. In the meantime it is necessary to continue to make provision for the children, and I should like to thank you for your continued assistance. Yours sincerely, Assistant Secretary. 292/946/37/38
