Description
Summary:1946-04-15 038-0012-004 The number is fluid as our parental responsibility is extended to cover the needs and emergencies which arise in the lives of young people without a home to fall back on. Those who continued their studies under the Juan Luis Vives Scholarship Trust have done well, gaining Diplomas in English, passing their Matriculation Examinations, and one or two entering Universities. The Trust funds are now exhausted, so that no further scholarships can be granted. The Carshalton Hostel is still continuing its excellent work for the boys and girls under its active local Committee. Due to their training in self government they are developing into young people with a strong sense of responsibility; they are, as their Secretary writes, "gleaning knowledge and wisdom not only from the exacting school of a close community, but from daily contacts with the vastly different world beyond." The Caerleon Hostel continues its good work for the few remaining boys, and much credit is due to Mrs. Fernandez, the Matron, who has remained so long to look after their welfare. We are grateful to the former Spanish Aid Committees in Cambridge, Glasgow, and Reigate for their continued interest in the Spaniards, and to our American Friends, the Foster Parents' Plan for War Children, for letters, parcels and contributions to their "adopted" boys and girls, and to the British Foster Parents' Committee for their continued help and interest. GENERAL The Committee anticipated that with the victory it would very soon be possible for some, at any rate, of the boys and girls to be re-united with their parents in Spain, but we regret to say that owing to the unsatisfactory economic conditions of many parents, the closing of the Frontier, the lack of boats and the continued political discrimination and persecution by Spanish Fascists, it has not been possible to achieve this. HEADQUARTERS War and after-War conditions have more than ever thrown responsibility on to our small loyal staff, whose personal knowledge and interest in the adult Spaniards and Basque children has been largely responsible for the usefulness and increasing activity of our work. With some temporary help and the warm co-operation of its Executive Committee and Officers, they have managed most successfully to meet all the demands made upon them. FINANCE Our income this year has enabled us, with careful planning, to cover our expenditure, and to add a small sum to the reserve which we are slowly building up to meet our needs, amongst them, repatriation as soon as this becomes possible. We acknowledge with very sincere gratitude the financial support and interest of our many friends and organisations, and the foster-parents whose personal help is invaluable. Once again we ask for the same support and sympathy which you have given us for so many years, in order to continue our work for these Refugees who have been so long exiled. Cheques, Money Orders and Postal Orders should be made payable to The National Joint Committee for Spanish Relief. Report prepared by Executive Commitee NATIONAL JOINT COMMITTEE FOR SPANISH RELIEF AND BASQUE CHILDREN'S TRUST LTD., 39, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1. 292/946/38/12(IV)
