Description
Summary:1939-06-13 038-0094-004 4. previously written asking for the removal of the children and Dr. Camps said it was not desirable to return the children to the convent there. After discussion it was decided that a letter should be sent to Canon Craven stating that as the children were now in Catholic Homes the Committee felt that it would be unsettling to the children to move them again. Canon Craven in another letter referred to Benito Lavin Lopez, sending a claim from the father, asking when the child was returning. It was stated that this boy went, with others, to Barcelona on the 15th March 1938. This was considered a serious matter and it was felt that every effort should be made to trace this boy. He was previously at Laleham, and it was suggested that a letter be sent to Sr. Briones at Margate asking if he could help in any way. (b) Letter fron Mr. Gamble Jones. A letter was read from Mr. Gamble Jones in which he stated that he and Mr. Trigg had not in any way slackened their efforts on behalf of the Basque Children, but that they had been working under very disagreeable circumstances at Brighton, and could not co-operate with the Warden there. Mr. Gamble Jones now asked if he and Mr. Trigg could co-operate direct with this Committee. This was discussed, and it was agreed that a letter should be sent to Mr. Gamble Jones thanking him for his work, but stating that this Committee did not wish to mae [make] any official arrangement to co-operate with him direct. (c) Mrs. Carritt's letter. A letter was read from Mrs. Carritt, Chairman of the Basque Children's Committee at Oxford, with further reference to the scheme (mentioned by Mr. Leonard, together with Mr. & Mrs.Johnstone) for taking out a party of older boys to work on the land in Mexico. Mrs. Carrit said she understood that there had been a proposal to pay the Johnstone's expenses when they reached Mexico (the Johnstone's were paying their own fares. The decision of the Committee was again referred to i.e. that the proposition had received sympathetic consideration, but that written consent from the Mexican Government would be required before any further decision could be given. No payment of expenses had been agreed to. A letter had already been sent to Mrs. Carritt on those lines. (c) Letter from Manchester Committee A letter was read from the Hon. Treasurer enclosing a cheque for £100, and stating that a further sum would be sent to the Committee after the accounts had been cleared up 9. ANY OTHER BUSINESS. Mrs. Gee stated she had received a further letter from Sr. Landa of the Margate Home, in which he said that the infected beds had now been removed to a closed room. Dr. Ellis said he had written in this connection, and read a letter from Mr. Walsh explaining the delay in the stoving of the infected clothes. In his letter Sr. Landa mentioned the excellent work of Sr. Briones and Mr. Jefferies, who had helped the boys very considerably with their English. Miss Garrett mentioned that it was difficult to obtain older boys from Margate for employment, and in this connection it was suggested that on the next occasion Mr. Walsh should be asked to send a boy if there was a job awaiting him. As Sr. Uranga was shortly leaving for Ecuador Dr. Ellis proposed, and it was cordially agreed, that a letter be sent thanking him for the valuable help he had given during his 292/946/38/94(IV)
