Summary:1938-08-29 038-0122-003 BRAMPTON 137. BANKS HOUSE, LOW ROW, CARLISLE. August 29th. 1938. Dear Tewson, I suggested to Miss McCleland that it might be possible to arrange a concert at the Blackpool Conference of the T.U.C. which would draw the attention of the members attending the Conference to the Basque children without pressing for any assistance too insistently. I am sure your agenda is very full, and I don't know whether this would be practicable, but I know your own children from Barnet are first class and, reinforced perhaps with some of the North of England children, I believe a very good performance could be given. One could not expect the whole of the T.U.C. to attend, but I though it might create a little talk and have a valuable effect. We have a good committee at Blackpool which, I think, would undertake the arrangements, as I am sure you will be fully occupied. It may be now too late to make the necessary arrangements for this, though if you yourself approved of something of the sort being done, I think there would be no need to trouble you further when I know you must be desperately busy with the arrangements for the Conference. I imagine that you will be making a report on the work of the Basque Children's Committee. I had, as a matter of fact, written to the T.U.C. asking for a copy of your General Report, but I think I cannot have applied to the right person, as I received a letter back from the Publicity Department saying that your report was not for sale to the public. Am I right in thinking that you still have a balance which could be available for us? You know as well as I do how difficult our present position is, and I do hope it will be possible for you to advance our case. [not only for the work which is being done.] The Trade Unions are capable of raising such large sums of money and have done so much for Spanish Relief in the past that I do feel it is important at this moment that our needs should not be overlooked. I have looked over all the reports from the Centres of children who may be repatriated, and the number is not large. It appears certain, therefore, that some 1,600 children will be with us for a very long time. I think 292/946/38/122(III)
