Description
Summary:038-0121-001 Secretary's. HVT/FC/14. PERSONAL. Mr. W. Lawther The Mineworkers' Federation, 50, Russell Square, W.C.1. 3rd October, 1938. Dear Mr. Lawther, CHILDREN OF SPANISH MINERS. As promised to you this morning I have looked into the question of the number of children in this country who are refugees from Spain and whose fathers were miners. The records are not complete, but I have received intimation that there are at least eighteen such children. The likelihood is that there are many more and I should be intensely grateful if it were possible for the Federation to assist these kiddies out of their Fund. Knowing the general sympathy with which this suggestion will be met I am very loath to go further, but may I submit for consideration, entirely on my own initiative and as Vice-Chairman of the National Committee for the Care of Basque Children, that probably a grant of a round sum of money might be earmarked and paid quarterly in advance. £500 would maintain twenty children for twelve months on the estimated cost of 10/- per week per child. Records are very difficult to get, particularly in the case of some of the younger children, but I feel there will be at least twenty whom the Federation would be fully justified in deciding to support. Yours sincerely, Assistant Secretary. 292/946/38/121
