Description
Summary:038-0160-001 TELEPHONE BRISTOL 21271. AREA SECRETARY J. DONOVAN. TRANSPORT & GENERAL WORKERS UNION AREA NO. 3. REGISTERED OFFICES, Transport House, SMITH SQUARE, WESTMINSTER, LONDON, S.W.1. AREA OFFICE, TRANSPORT HALL, TAILORS COURT, BROAD STREET, BRISTOL. 1. GENERAL SECRETARY, ERNEST BEVIN ASSISTANT GEN. SEC. ARTHUR DEAKIN. FINANCIAL SECRETARY, STANLEY HIRST. FH/NH 14th February, 1938. Mr. E. Harries, Trades Union Congress, Transport Hall, Tailors' Court, Broad Street, BRISTOL. 1. Dear Mr. Harries, Basque Children. I am sorry not to have answered your letter earlier, but have been away from Bristol since February 1st until last week-end. I have had a talk with our Area Secretary, Mr. Donovan with respect to the possibilities of something being done for the above through our various Works Committees, but I am afraid there is very little hope in this direction. We tried it ourselves when the Basque Children first came to Bristol, but I am sorry to say that we had very little response and right up to the present moment that is the position. We have tried in various ways to work up some enthusiasm, but it is a very difficult business. I am afraid, therefore, that we could not hope to get a successful conference. Sorry, Yours sincerely, Florence Hancock EPH 292/946/38/160
