Description
Summary:039-0086-001 Telegraphic Address: TRADUNIC, SOWEST, LONDON Telephone: VICTORIA 6261 (4 LINES) THE TRADES UNION CONGRESS GENERAL COUNCIL General Secretary: SIR WALTER CITRINE, K.B.E. (To whom all communications should be addressed) Your Ref. Our Ref. WMC/HVT/EK/959. Department. Secretary's. TRANSPORT HOUSE, SMITH SQUARE, LONDON, S.W.1. BASQUE CHILDREN. I have your letter in regard to the above matter and I should like to say how much your offer is appreciated. I should point out, however, that the Basque Government are particularly anxious that the children should not be separated in ones and twos, and the Home Office has made a similar order. The reasons for this course are that, whilst assured of the kindness of the people who would willingly take one or two children into their homes, the fact remains that the children would be separated from their companions and feel very lonely. This feeling of isolation would be increased by the language difficulty and it is felt that by keeping them in groups it will be possible to maintain their Basque identity to a greater extent and also continue with their education. In many parts of the country schemes are in preparation for the reception of groups of children. Where this is being done persons in the locality will be able to help by subscriptions and services to the local committees responsible. In all other cases contributions however small may be forwarded to the fund which has been set up specially to assist in the work in question. Such contributions should be sent to me at the above address. With many thanks for your interest in this matter. Yours sincerely, General Secretary. 292/946/39/86
