Special Supplement to Labour Press Service 15th December, 1937 LABOUR'S SPANISH CAMPAIGN Mr. Attlee's Plea Speaking at Rhyl on December 10th on his recent experience in Spain, Mr. Attlee urged the necessity for sending help to the starving Spanish people. "The policy of non-intervention in Spain has been a one-sided non-intervention" he said. "I have yet to learn that it has prevented anything that was required by the rebels from reaching there. It has severely hampered the Government of Spain from getting arms and getting food. "There is nothing that prevents us from feeding the people, particularly the little children. There is a terrible shortage of milk in Spain today. Everyone of us can help to send that essential commodity to them. Let all the democratic countries join together to send food to Spain and not allow them to starve ..... I can never forget the children I saw in Madrid and Barcelona. I talked to them and saw them at play, and then I wondered which is the greater danger that hangs over them - the possibility of death from the air or the possibility of death from starvation." SUCCESS OF THE MILK TOKEN SCHEME Co-operative Societies continue to report excellent progress with the sale of Milk Tokens. The Co-operative Union is now receiving cheques for the Tokens sold and they announce that many societies are sending in regular amounts up to £20 each week-end and will continue to do so for the duration of the scheme. Recent contributions from this source include £50 from the Portsea Island, £45 from the Nottingham Society representing the sale of 1,800 tokens and £25 from York. South Wales has been particularly generous. Cwmgorse Society with only 1,100 members has exhausted its tokens and asked for 2,000 more. Many Glamorgan societies are asking for further supplies. THE MILK FOR SPAIN FUND A steady flow of contributions is being received at Transport House for the "Milk for Spain Fund". Many of these are donations from poor people representing real sacrifices on the part of the givers. A donation of £50 was received from the miners of a colliery in a small district where there were 500 unemployed, 90% of whom were on the Means Test. Another contribution of £4 had been collected in pence from members of the unemployed. Touching little gifts are being received from children. Letters and contributions from men and women all over the country indicate the strong sympathy felt by British workers for their comrades in Spain. 2,000,000 LEAFLETS DISPATCHED Local Labour Parties and all Labour bodies are reminded that leaflets giving details of the Milk Scheme are available free in unlimited quantities. It is encouraging to record that over 2,000,000 leaflets have already been dispatched. MASS DEMONSTRATION AT THE ALBERT HALL All seats have now been sold for the Great Mass Demonstration at the Albert Hall on December 19th, organised by the Spain Campaign Committee. A feature of the demonstration will be a fine programme of music. Mr. Paul Robeson will sing, the London Labour Choral Union will contribute a selection of Spanish songs, and Mr. Arnold Goldsbrough will give an organ recital. Local London Labour Parties are organising a march to the hall.
