Description
Summary:017b-0021-001 NCL Feb 21st 1939 217. SPAIN: It was reported that arrangements for the Demonstration on Sunday, February 26th, were in hand, and in response to suggestions from Mr. Morrison Mr. Williams indicated that there would be special facilities for press publicity in the "Herald" during the remainder of the week. Letters were reported from the "Labour Spain Committee" (a) proposing the terms of a Resolution to be submitted to the Demonstration, and (b) stating that the Committee would be prepared to make a substantial contribution (say £100) to the collection at the Demonstration, but would wish it to be earmarked for relief in Central Spain, and desiring that an announcement acknowledging the contribution should be made at the Demonstration. Mr. Lathan reported that on behalf of the National Executive Committee, with Mr. Noel-Baker and Mr. Gillies, he had met representatives of the "Labour Spain Committee" and had discussed proposals similar to those they now desired to be embodied in the Resolution for the Demonstration: viz. No co-operation with the Government; Nation-wide Demonstrations in working hours; Co-operation with all progressive forces in aid of Spain. In the course of the discussion it was agreed that the proposals of the "Labour Spain Committee" were impracticable, and it was RESOLVED: "That the letter be received." With regard to the proposed contribution to the collection at the Demonstration, it was RESOLVED: That the contribution be accepted on the terms indicated." It was also RESOLVED: "That the officers draft a suitable Resolution for Sunday's Demonstration in the light of events during the current week." 292/946/17b/21
