WMC/WJB/RC/10. International. 11th May, 1937. Mr. F. Winchester, Secretary, West Ham Trades Council, 14, Upton Avenue, FOREST GATE, E.7. Dear Mr. Winchester, In reply to your letter of the 10th inst., in which you enclosed resolutions relating to the recent International Conference held in London and also to the May Day Demonstrations, it is not our practice to issue verbal reports of congresses held under the auspices of the International Federation of Trade Unions and the Labour and Socialist International. The National Council of Labour have decided not to depart from this practice and this decision covers, of course, any one of the speeches that were delivered. Mr. Bevan's [Bevin's] observations, we regret to say, have been subjected to gross mis-representations. We may [say] add that his speech was not delivered until he had consulted with the British representatives as to the views that were to be expressed, and nothing was said by him to which in their opinion, the slightest objection could be taken. The resolution with regard to holding the May Day Demonstrations on the 1st May is noted, also the proposal for payment of wages for the day's holiday. This suggestion shall have our careful consideration. Yours faithfully, General Secretary.
