TELEPHONE CONVERSATION. 8th November, 1938. Mr. Peacock of the National Trade Union Club telephoned. He said he was speaking for Ernst Toller who was in this country. He had been (as we knew) to Spain and had since been to Paris and elsewhere and had come here to try and work up help for the civilian population of Spain. He was very anxious, in Sir Walter's absence, to have a few words with Mr. Tewson. He was living the country at the end of the week. I explained Mr. Tewson's absence and said I thought the matter had better be referred to the International Department. Perhaps Mr. Toller could see Mr. Bolton or Mr. Bell. I consulted Mr. Bolton and on his instructions telephoned again to Mr. Peacock. Mr. Bolton's view was that the matter was an international one and was in the hands of the I.F.T.U., who were considering the matter in which Mr. Toller was interested. Mr. Bell had left for Paris for a meeting of the I.F.T.U. Mr. Bolton had no authority to meet Mr. Toller and would not be able to help him if he did. In Sir Walter's absence the only person Mr. Toller could usefully see would be Sir Walter's substitute on the I.F.T.U. - Mr. Hicks. Unfortunately Mr. Hicks had left for Paris for the I.F.T.U. meeting. He would be in Paris until Friday of this week. Mr. Peacock made no further remark. C.S.B
