Description
Summary:025a-0020-001 International. HVT/AC/DT/150. 20th November, 1940. Mr. A. Deakin, Transport & General Workers' Union, Transport House, Smith Square, LONDON. S.W.1. Dear Mr. Deakin, SPANISH SEAMEN I thank you for your letter of the 18th of November from which I am very glad to note that your Executive Council has agreed to meet your Union's quota of the additional thousand pounds which was voted by the British section of the International Transportworkers' Federation to assist the Spanish seamen in this country. Please convey to your Council our best thanks for their loyal collaboration in this work. Our General Council entirely endorses your Executive's hope that we may soon see an end to this problem. For your information we have, on frequent occasions, submitted particulars of the men to the Ministry of Labour with a view to pressing for their employment either on land or at sea. The numbers are steadily declining as men find shore or marine jobs. We have as recently as a week ago sent complete particulars of the men now remaining, to the Department handling the International Labour Service, which Mr. Bevin recently inaugurated. We did this because conversations which we had with this Department led us to hope that these men might be found employment in one of the numerous branches of the war effort. We are, therefore, looking forward to these men soon all doing useful work. Yours sincerely, Assistant Secretary. 292/946/25a/20
