Scottish Trades Union Congress General Council. WILLIAM ELGER. J.P. 33 ELMBANK CRESCENT. Secretary. 'Phone: Central 3179 Glasgow, July 15th 1938 To the Secretary of the Union or Trades Council named in the address Ref. C.20 (1938-39). Dear Sir, SCOTTISH FOOD SHIP FOR SPAIN EDINBURGH AND GLASGOW TRADES COUNCILS' JOINT COMMITTEE I am instructed by the General Council to refer to my circular letter of May 13th, 1938 with reference to the Glasgow Conference convened by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Trades Councils. Following the issue of this letter, an assurance was given from the Chair at the Conference on May 21st that all monies collected would be dealt with in a manner acceptable to the National Council of Labour. Since then the General Council have met representatives of the promoters of the scheme and specific assurances have been received from them that the procedure, both with regard to the collection of money and the consignment of food to Spain, will meet the requirements of the National Council of Labour. The General Council are satisfied that the effort of the Trades Councils' Joint Committee to increase the supplies of food so greatly needed by our Spanish comrades is an effort that should receive the maximum support from trade unionists in Scotland. The General Council therefore request your Union or Trades Council to recommend its branches to co-operate fully in this effort. Yours faithfully, WM. ELGER, Secretary.
