MEMORANDUM OF INTERVIEW. Date 15 September, 1938. Time 4 p.m. to 4.5 p.m. SUBJECT. FOOD SHIPMENT TO SPAIN: Reference AC/12 Present W. Schevenels (I.F.T.U.) A.E.Carthy. Mr. W. Schevenels was informed that, with regard to the question of sending 200 tons extra food with the 3OO tons that the Scottish Committee are sending to Spain, we had now learned that the boat with the Scottish food had to go to Valencia. For our part, we were willing to send the 200 tons of food to Valencia, since the Spanish Consul in Glasgow stated that the sea route was safer now. On being asked whether the food shortage was greater in Valencia than Barcelona, and whether the ship might reach Valencia by the Gibraltar sea route in comparative safety, Mr. SCHEVENELS said that there was no greater need in Valencia than Barcelona, and that they always suggested Barcelona for shipments, but, he said, if we could manage to send to Valencia, it would be quite alright as far as the I.F.T.U. was concerned, since if it reached there, it would go to Madrid, where the need was great. On being asked whether, in the event of our sending to Barcelona, we should send goods, or ask him to buy in Paris, Mr. SCHEVENELS said he did not mind one way or the other.
