Description
Summary:032-0027-001 Secretary's. HVT/FC/244. 22nd December, 1939. Mr. C. R. Goodchild, The Southgate Labour Party, 66, Park Drive, Winchmore Hill, N.21. Dear Mr. Goodchild, INTERNATIONAL BRIGADE. I am in receipt of your letter of the 20th instant enclosing cheque for £2. which you ask should be used in aid of the International Brigade men still in France. I should point out that all the public appeals which have been made for the International Solidarity Fund in connection with Spain have been in aid of the Spanish workers. There is, of course, the fund which has been set up for the International Brigade, but that is not under our auspices, and the General Council have decided that the money raised for the Spanish workers must be devoted solely to that purpose. I should be glad, therefore, to know whether you are agreeable that the £2. should be spent in our normal way. There are thousands of refugees in France still to be catered for and we have, in this country, nearly 200 Spanish seamen whom we are having to maintain. We simply cannot take on any further commitments in the wide range of German, Austrian, Spanish and Czech refugees which we at present have. Your receipt is being retained pending your reply. With the Compliments of the Season, Yours sincerely, Assistant Secretary. 292/946/32/27
