Dear Comrades, Although the help given to Spain by the National Centres of all countries has been on an unprecedented scale during the past 2½ years, the huge stream of refugees from Spain again compels us to make a fresh appeal to National Centres. According to the latest information, about 150,000 women, children and aged persons have crossed the French frontier in the last few days. In addition to these there are already 50,000 soldiers from the Republican Army (a further 100,000 are expected) interned in a camp by the French Government. The state of exhaustion of these women and children is indescribable. The French authorities are of course organising the largest part of the relief work themselves, but the obligation, which rests on the French Labour Movement and the International for the thousands of children and hundreds of comrades who are now in France nevertheless remains so great that it is feared that the existing funds will be very rapidly exhausted. The International Solidarity Fund has been able to get out of Spain all the children from its homes in Catalonia. Some of these, to the number of 420, are already in Belgium, or are on the way there. The Spanish Committee, which during the last few months has carried on its work in Barcelona, has moved to the Spanish-French frontier and is there arranging for immediate assistance to be given to our refugees. As these refugees are already streaming towards Paris and the northern districts of France, we have arranged with the Executive of the Spanish National Trade Union Centre (UGT) and the Spanish Socialist Party for a Relief Committee to be set up with its headquarters in Paris. This special relief work naturally requires funds in cash, and it also has to be borne in mind that the relief work must still be continued in Spain, i.e., further supplies of food must be sent to the districts of Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Jaen, Murcia, etc. Trusting that you will be able to respond to this appeal of the International Solidarity Fund with an early and generous donation, Yours sincerely, W.
