Description
Summary:034-0032-001 22.4.42 INTERNATIONAL BRIGADE ASSOCIATION. Miss Cobbett phoned to say that she had a call from the International Brigade Association which she was passing over because Mr. Tewson was out. I later learned that the call had first gone to Sir Walter's Department and had been passed from there to the Assistant Secretary's Department. Mr. Jack Brent telephoned on behalf of the Association and said that they had some 48 men who had arrived at Vera Cruz recently, on the "Sao Thome", a Portuguese boat. They had no actual date of arrival, but their cable giving this information was dated from Vera Cruz on the 20th of April. "The 48 men in question all had Mexican visas, but only 11 had been allowed to land, and 37 faced the prospect of being taken back to Casablanca. I asked him what he desired us to do, and he said he would like us to get in touch with the Mexican Trade Union Centre. I said I thought that that was rather a matter for the International to deal with. He agreed, and I put the call through to Mr. Schevenels. A.E.C. 292/946/34/32(i)
