Fischer led the defense at the Rivonia Treason Trial, arguably saving Nelson Mandela and other ANC leaders from execution. When all of Fischer's comrades were jailed or exiled, he took a defiant solitary stand, speaking out against the Afrikaner Establishment and the apartheid government. Pursued by the state's security police agents, for a while Fischer lived in disguise as apartheid's most wanted man. Finally, he was captured and sentenced to life imprisonmnet in 1966. |
