Summary:Recording of the international conference "Between Past and Future: The Revolutions of 1989 and the Struggle for Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe" organized by CEU and the University of Maryland, held at CEU between 26th and 28th of March, 1999. Contains the final part from the media panel of the conference and images from the informal discussions that were ongoing afterwards, both in the Auditorium and at the reception held in Monument Building, 1st floor. At the reception, the Academic Pro-Rector of CEU Sorin Antohi and Prof. Vladimir Tismăneanu from Maryland University introduce Philosopher Ágnes Heller from New School University who delivers the keynote address of the evening. The following day (March 27, 1999) the second conference panel entitled “Meanings of 1989 and the Present Significance of the Past” takes place and it is chaired by Professor Vladimir Tismăneanu who is also an organizer and speaker of the conference. Speakers in this panel are Jacques Rupnik (Institute of Political Studies, Paris), Tamás Gáspár Miklós (Georgetown University), Karol Soltan (University of Maryland), Daniel Chirot (University of Washington) and Sorin Antohi (Academic Pro-Rector at CEU). Jacques Rupnik and G.M. Tamás are the first two speakers of the academic panel.
