Description
Summary:Extracts from Polish underground publications compiled and translated into English by the RFE Polish Publication Unit for broadcasting purposes. Introductions to most articles are provided by RFE staff, and items are compiled in issues based mainly on theme and date. Passages from Sermons by Father Jerzy Popiełuszko / by Jerzy Popiełuszko, rev. After the imposition of martial law Father Jerzy Popiełuszko began holding Masses for the Fatherland on the last Sunday of every month at the St. Stanisław Kostka Church in the Żoliborz district of Warsaw. The Masses drew the faithful in their thousands. The sermons, short extracts of which are translated below, reached an even greater audience: they were circulated in the form of tape recordings, and passages were reprinted by the underground press. The Structure and Method of Secret Police Activities[from: Baza, no. 7(14) (July/August 1984)]This article was based on material prepared by the Information Service of the Regional Solidarity Committee for the Mazowsze region. "Baza" is a sociopolitical monthly published in Warsaw. Criminal Psychiatric Practices in the USSR and People's Poland[from: CDN - Głos Wolnego Robotnika, no. 82 (11 September 1984)]"CDN-Głos Wolnego Robotnika" [To be Continued - The Voice of the Free Worker], is a Warsaw based weekly published by the Interfactory Workers' Committee since mid-1982. I Intend to Act Openly: A Talk with Zbigniew Romaszewski[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 102 (19 October 1984)]This is the first of three interviews given by one of the leading personalities in KOR (Komitet Obrony Robotników) and later Solidarity, and published in underground publications. Zbigniew Romaszewski is a physicist who, with his wife, spontaneously began helping persecuted workers from Radom in the summer of 1976. He then joined KOR and ran its Intervention Bureau, a watchdog body helping to redress injustices committed by the authorities. After the creation of Solidarity he became a member of its regional committee for the Mazowsze (Warsaw) area and continued to run the Bureau under its auspices. He went underground in December 1981 and started the clandestine broadcasts of Radio Solidarity. He was arrested in the summer of 1982 and sentenced for his part in Radio Solidarity. He was also to be put on trial with three other former KOR leaders, but was released as a result of the amnesty in July 1984. A Radical Program or Radical Action: An Interview with Zbigniew Romaszewski[from: Tygodnik Wojenny, no. 95 (19 October 1984)]"Tygodnik Wojenny" is a Warsaw-based Solidarity publication that has been appearing regularly since January 1982. How I See It: A Talk with Zbigniew Romaszewski[from: CDN - Głos Wolnego Robotnika, no. 88 (23 October 1984)]These are excerpts from an interview with Zbigniew Romaszewski that were published in a Warsaw underground weekly "CDN - Głos Wolnego Robotnika" [To Be Continued - The Voice of the Free Worker]. The interview was obviously conducted before the abduction and murder of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. How to Endure?[from: Solidarność, no. 13(115) (20 August 1984)]Four years almost to the day (23 August 1980) since the striking Gdańsk shipyards published their first bulletin, the weekly that grew out of that small leaflet and persists despite martial law and the banning of the union, has published an editorial outlining the various attitudes possible in the face of relentless persecution.
