Summary: | Extracts from Polish underground publications compiled and translated into English by the RFE Polish Publication Unit for broadcasting purposes. Introductions to most articles are provided by RFE staff, and items are compiled in issues based mainly on theme and date.
A National Industry / by Bolesław Ścigany[from: Słowo, no. 4(29) (5 April 1984)]"Słowo" [The Word] appears fortnightly in Warsaw and is edited by "members of Solidarity, the ISA [the Independent Student Association], and non-union members." This article by Bolesław Ścigany (an obvious pen name - "ścigany" means "pursued") gives a broad picture of underground publishing activity in Poland today.
Refined Techniques in Propaganda[from: Obraz, no. 4(11) (April 1984)]"Obraz" [Picture] is a monthly dealing with social affairs published in Szczecin by the Independent Solidarity Group, an ad hoc committee of Solidarity members and supporters.
The Teacher: A Representative of State Ideology[from: Tu Teraz, no. 25 (15 March 1984)]The monthly "Tu Teraz" [Here, Now], is published in Warsaw by the Team for Independent Education, an underground body functioning under the auspices of Warsaw Solidarity, which is involved in the independent education movement.
An Appeal to Teachers by the Lower Silesian Council for Education[from: Z Dnia na Dzień, no. 15(317) (15-28 April 1984)]This appeal from the underground Council for Education in Lower Silesia was published in the Wrocław Solidarity Information Service weekly "Z Dnia na Dzień" [From Day to Day], which appeared regularly throughout martial law and is a continuation of the pre-martial law Solidarity Information Service of the same name. The Lower Silesian Council for Education is one of several similar organizations set up by the teaching profession throughout Poland. The appeal refers to the recent attempt by the authorities to forbid the wearing or hanging of crucifixes.
Libraries[from: Errata, no. 1 (December 1983)]"Errata" is subtitled The Independent Paper of the Intelligentsia in Białystok (Eastern Poland). In its first issue, "Errata" prints a set of guidelines for organizing and running an underground library.
Family Circles, I'm for Them / by Tadeusz Żuliński[from: Niepodleglość, no. 2/32 (27 February 1984)]"Niepodległość" [Independence] (not to be confused with the Warsaw-based political monthly of the same name, from which we have included articles in previous RAD Polish Samizdat Extracts) is published by the Kraków section of "The Leadership of Current Action of the Confederation for an Independent Poland." The Confederation for an Independent Poland (KPN) was founded by Leszek Moczulski in September 1979. Tadeusz Żulinski's article refers to the idea of "family circles" initially suggested by a "known Solidarity activist" who writes under the pen name "Edmund" in number 56-57 of the Solidarity Information Bulletin of the Kraków Medical Academy and State Hospital.
Brothers, Fans, or Enemies?[from: Baza, no. 2(9) (February 1984)]This is a somewhat shortened article about Poland's eastern ethnic neighbors and the complicated relationship between these various peoples and the Poles both now and in the past. "Baza" [The Base] is a monthly publication produced in Warsaw by the Regional Solidarity Committee of Resistance, an informal group of Solidarity members and supporters.
