A young man has set enough money aside to live well without having to work for a while and spends his days riding cabs, flirting with ladies, and gambling on pinball games. This film follows his aimless days and nights. It is a story of twenty-four hours with hardly any events from a dramaturgical point of view. We are witnessing long scenes that bring no turning points at all. They just keep up with each other in the run of time. Otherwise they are going over each other almost stagnating. The authenticity of the film is provided by its dramatic strength. The reason of showing certain conditions is justified by this dramatic force.The approach, the cinematography and the style of acting all point towards documentary. András Jeles at the time was interested in the new approach to cinema promoted by The Béla Balázs Studio, founded in the early 1960s, which became a workshop for the creative and experimental talents of a string of rebellious young Hungarian film-makers. They pursued a deliberate search for a new cinematic language. |
