Description
Summary:Verzio FF submission Juan Alejandro Ramírez is a New York-based documentarist and anthropologist who explores Peru, the country of his birth, in all of his films. Some Kind of Sadness is Ramírez's poetic essay on the Peruvian soul, a series of fragments - history, scenery, and people. The documentary opens with images of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, where Peru beat Austria in football. However, the victory of the Peruvian team, composed mainly of black and Mestizo players, was annulled after a referee review. Race and colour play a significant role in the outcome of this historical match and in the film, which addresses questions of race and identity. Football functions as a conduit that leads the viewer to reflect on the Peruvian identity by observing the lives of people such as taxi driver Melquíades and the director’s aging father and American globetrotter friend.
