Summary: | Sanamacha's Story chronicles the disappearance of a 15 year old boy, Sanamacha Yumlembam, in Manipur. The state of Manipur, in the highlands of northeastern India, is one of eight states inhabited by 40 million people of Tibeto-Burman origin. Since the 1950s, the region has produced several secessionist movements against the Indian government. In response, India has militarized the region. The Indian government restricts entry by foreign nationals, and bars international media and human rights observers from entering the northeast. On the night of February 12 1998, the Indian military entered Sanamacha's home and abducted him in front of dozens of witnesses. Sanamacha has not been seen since, nor has his body ever been recovered. The video documents the testimonies of witnesses and family members and provides insight into the advocacy work grassroots groups in Manipur have done to bring the military's actions to justice.
