Description
Summary:Extracts from Polish underground publications compiled and translated into English by the RFE Polish Publication Unit for broadcasting purposes. Introductions to most articles are provided by RFE staff, and items are compiled in issues based mainly on theme and date. The first major underground publication to discuss the problem of radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl accident was "KOS," the biweekly publication of the Committee for Social Defense in Warsaw. It published a special supplement on May 4. We have reprinted three out of six articles from the special supplement on Czernobyl. Almost the entire issue of "Tygodnik Mazowsze," no. 169, of 8 May 1984, was devoted to the Chernobyl disaster. This is the leading Solidarity publication in the Warsaw region and has a print run of about 40,000 copies. In several articles, it gave a day by day description of the events; offered two medical articles on dangers of radiation; printed an interview with a nuclear scientist describing the Chernobyl-type Soviet reactors and the type of reactor that is planned for Żarnowiec near Gdańsk; and explained various technical terms such as becquerel and rem. It also thanked "the people from [various] fields of science who have offered us their cooperation and aid in preparing this issue, supplied us with data, and granted us interviews." Three other related articles are reprinted below. In addition, "Tygodnik Mazowsze," no. 170, of 15 May 1986, featured several articles on Czernobyl and the ensuing situation in Poland. The issue opened with a declaration of the Solidarity Interim Coordination Commission, signed by Zbigniew Bujak (Warsaw), Jan Andrzej Górny (Katowice), Marek Muszyński (Wrocław), and the representatives for Gdańsk and Kraków who remain anonymous. The Presidium of the Małopolska (Kraków) Solidarity Committee also issued a communique on the Chernobyl accident.
