A classic comedy. Stanisław works in an art museum in Warsaw. When a painting is found to be missing from the store room, he is accused of stealing it. rather than go to jail, he decides to borrow some of his wife's clothes and her wig, and go into hiding as a woman called Maria. Maria gets a job as housemaid, although his practical home skills are pretty well non-existent, but a succession of amorous husbands, difficult children, and eccentric bosses drives him from one job to the next. Meanwhile his efforts to keep in touch with his wife lead to her becoming suspicious of his involvement with another girl he is talking to. Finally he finds work with the dilettante director of an architectural practice who has to write and deliver a speech on town-planning. Maria is so helpful that the boss wants her to accompany him to the ceremony itself. However, there is a snag: Maria would have to pretend to be a man! In the end the painting if found, and Stanisław is cleared of all charges. Nevertheless, he was earning so much as a housemaid that he is not all that sure whether he wants to go back to his job at the museum. |
