Independent Education[from: Gazeta Niecodzienna, no. 6(11) (1984)]In keeping with its title, which means "Nondaily Newspaper," this is an irregular and undated publication. It is published by the Committee for Independent Culture, which was formed at the end of 1982, a year after the introduction of martial law in Poland. The committee consists of representatives of various creative professions and the arts. In January 1983 the committee was recognized by the underground leadership of Solidarity as the coordinating body for various initiatives in the field of art and culture undertaken by union cells. Its function is to organize these initiatives and to formulate statements on art and culture. The following item is an interview with one of the organizers of independent educational facilities.
They Know What They Want: The Self-Education Movement[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 83 (5 April 1984)]The leading underground Solidarity weekly, published in Warsaw, offers an account on the practical aspects of the self-education movement. The article begins with what is presumably a personal experience of the author with the unofficial approach to education.
The USA and Poland: A Sober Look[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 85 (23 April 1984)]This is a somewhat mocking summing up of the apparent state of Polish-American relations as published in one of the main underground publications, based in Warsaw.
About Russia / by Mieszek Orfeusz[from: Niepodleglość, no. 27 (March 1984)]"Niepodleglość" [Independence] has been appearing in Warsaw since early 1982. It is an independent monthly, not affiliated with Solidarity, which supports the idea of a sovereign and independent Poland without calling for violence. The article below explains the publication's attitude to Russia following some readers' criticism of a recent article. The author's name is obviously a pseudonym.
The Matter of Compensation for Ex-Prisoners of Soviet Labor Camps[from: Unia, no. 6]"Unia" is an undated underground journal dealing with social, economic, historical, political, and cultural matters, often reprinting material from other underground publications. On several occasions it has published transcripts of commentaries by Radio Free Europe.
