| Summary: | Staff of the Samizdat Archives (SA) created the subject files to support their research efforts. The files are based on the subject list developed specifically for this project.
The subject list covers topic relating to Samizdat issues and contains 38 general subject categories (with sub-categories and sub-sub-categories) in Russian language.

The subject files include clippings from Russian and Western press, news agency releases, RFE/RL research papers, transcripts of radio broadcasts, and other information that aided SA staff in ascertaining the authenticity of Samizdat documents, restoring the picture of dissident movement in the USSR, understanding the context in which it was taking place. Copies of Samizdat documents were also placed in the subject files , making it a natural “index" to the published Samizdat.
The files give extensive information to criticism and opposition to the Soviet regime, dissidents and persecution of dissidents, prison conditions and labor camps, ethnic minorities, religious movements, anti-Western and anti-RL propaganda.
