Description
Summary:Duration: 00:41:00 This documentary explores the recent political history of Azerbaijan from the gaining of independence in 1991 up to the highly controversial presidential elections of 2003. As expected, Ilham Aliyev, son of the outgoing president, Heydar Aliyev, was easily elected while the international observers held the elections to be neither free nor fair. Although the director provides a wide-ranging critique of the corruption and human rights abuse that marred late president Aliev's 10-year rule, the portrayal of Azeri society as the most progressive in the Islamic region, pro-European, inherently democratic and liberal comes across as propagandistic and problematic. This message is especially at odds with the graphic pictures of street violence taken in Baku in the aftermath of the rigged elections as the police resorted to tear gas and beatings in order to disperse the peaceful crowds protesting the results.
