Description
Summary:Extracts from Polish underground publications compiled and translated into English by the RFE Polish Publication Unit for broadcasting purposes. Introductions to most articles are provided by RFE staff, and items are compiled in issues based mainly on theme and date. A Talk with Zbigniew Bujak[from: Wola, no. 26(152) (26 August 1985)]These are excerpts from an interview given by the underground leader of Solidarity for the Warsaw region to an underground weekly published in a suburb of Warsaw. He speaks of developments in factories since the creation of Solidarity and after the imposition of martial law and advocates the benefits of workers' self-management as a school for future leaders. Readiness: An Interview with Professor Bronisław Geremek[from: Walka, no. 3 (June/July 1985)]A prominent member of the opposition in Poland, the medieval historian Bronisław Geremek was dismissed this spring from the Polish Academy of Sciences. His interview in the Wrocław underground quarterly "Walka" [Struggle], is translated here in excerpts. To Remain Myself: A Talk with Zbigniew Romaszewski[from: Prześwit, no. 39 (August 1985)]These excerpts from an interview with Romaszewski appeared in "Prześwit" [Glimmer], an underground Solidarity monthly from Lódź. Romaszewski, a physicist by profession, was a leading member of the opposition before 1980 as head of the Intervention Bureau of the Workers' Defense Committee [Komitet Obrony Robotników (KOR)] and later joint founder of Radio Solidarity. A Talk with a Security Policeman[from: Biuletyn Dolnośląski, no. 6(66) (September 1985)]This interview with an anonymous officer of the secret police was conducted by a reporter from the monthly "Biuletyn Dolnośląski" [Lower Silesian Bulletin], which is published in Wrocław. The officer distinguishes between his police branch, the Security Service (Polish acronym: SB) formed in July 1954, and the Stalinist Security Office (Polish acronym: UB), which was partially purged at that time and was responsible for the brutal repression of all resistance after the imposition of a communist regime in Poland in 1944.
