Description
Summary:Duration: 01:30:00 The documentary tells the history of the developemnt of gymanstics in the Czech and Slovak lands, from Miroslava Tyrse up to the heroes of the commnist present. It is made up of three episodes (1862-1938; 1947-1965, 1975-1985), in accordance with the development of the gymanstics phenomenon in the country. The interesting element of the documentary lies in the fact that mass gymanstics are described as a fundamental expression of national identity, but their outmost perfection was achieved only under the communist regime, which in itslef generates a source of legitimacy, thus bringing the movie closer to being propaganda material. Many of the slogans of the communist period are reproduced with the pretext of telling the history of gymnastics, which often times it also overlaps with that of socialism in Czechoslovakia. However, the narrators still criticizes the so-called "dogmatism and formalism of the 1950s and 1960s'" - reflective of the different stage of state socialism at the time of the making of the documentary.
