Summary:1926-05-05 1918-1939 "The British Worker, 5 May 1926 (page 1)" [g0012001.jpg], 5 May 1926, Trades Union Congress The 'British Worker' was the official strike newspaper of the TUC and was printed on the presses of the 'Daily Herald'. Just before the first issue of the 'British worker' went to print, the 'Daily Herald' offices were raided by detectives, with mounted police holding back the large crowd which gathered to defend the building. A dozen copies of the 'British Worker' were printed for the city commissioner and the police continued to occupy the building until permission to print was received. The first issue was on the streets just before midnight on May 5. There were 11 issues of the 'British Worker, the last appearing on May 17. The first print was of 320,000 copies, later increased to 500,000. The first two issues had 8 pages, but following Government regulations restricting paper, it was reduced to four pages.
