Description
Summary:1943-10 1943 1940s 36 pages What this Conference was about No question is of greater importance to the people than their health. To-day good health is no longer seen merely as a fight against disease but as the much wider question of creating all the conditions for a healthy life. The absence of such conditions in home, factory, or town causes an immense amount of avoidable illness, which in wartime is increased by the strain of long hours, travelling, black-out, speed-up and undernourishment. The serious increase in accidents and disease is shown by the figures for V.D., T.B., dermatitis, and fatal and non-fatal casualties in factory and mine. The Ministry of Health has estimated that colds and flu alone lose in one year the equivalent of 3,500 tanks, 1,000 bombers and one million rifles. Good health is a vital munition in the war against Fascism. This Conference was convened by the Communist Party to place before the Labour Movement and other progressive sections in the North-East some immediate measures that can and need to be taken now to improve the health of the people, to explain the need for a comprehensive National Health Service and to meet the post-war requirements of the area.
