Description
Summary:1943-10 1943 1940s 36 pages Q.— When local Authorities co-opt members to their Health Committees they tend to restrict themselves to the wives of Councillors or to people with some connection of the kind. Would it not be better to have people with experience of health work, such as midwives, nurses, etc., serving on these committees? A.— There should be consultative Committees with representatives on them from all sorts of organisations such as teachers and those you have named. District Nurses in particular because of the deplorable conditions under which many of them are working need such Committees. To the miners I would say give some attention to the conditions of some of your District Nurses. I know of some who are living in houses with no water laid on. It is not good enough. DISCUSSION. Mr. R. McGLEN (Washington). New doctors will play an important part in a National Health Service It is necessary, therefore, that there should be refresher courses for doctors. There are refresher courses for the men in the Services, so why not for doctors too. It seems to me that doctors' surgeries have not improved this last 30 years. I do not place the blame entirely upon the doctors but I do say to them, support the demand for a National Health Service which will enable you to provide a full medical service for the people. DELEGATE (Association of Scientific Worker). A National Health Service should not just be a question of linking existing medical services. There are many people who are not ill enough to need a doctor who need a Health Service because they are below a good standard of health. Conscription for the Forces revealed about 41 per cent of those presenting themselves for examination as being C3. It is a pity that workers look upon attention to health as something effeminate. Such a feeling must be overcome before we shall be able to make real progress. More money must be given for medical research. At the moment it is something like £200000 a year whereas millions are spent on research to discover new ways to kill people. I think the Communist Party is to be complimented upon organising such a Conference as this and Councillor Esther deserves our thanks for speaking here in face of the threats of the Labour Party Chiefs. 28 15X/2/103/295
