19 greatest care should be exercised, and it will be well only to have intercourse in the safest period, namely from a week after one monthly flow to four days before the next, in addition to employing one of the above methods. Several medical authorities state that additional safety is given if the wife always passes water immediately after intercourse. Do not forget that if through carelessness or otherwise a woman finds herself pregnant, she ought never to take any drugs, or interfere with herself in any way. If her life is endangered, her medical adviser will help her. But the law does not allow any doctor or anyone else to interfere in any other circumstances, under most severe penalties. All advertised cures are most harmful, as well as being useless. Finally, remember that the information given in this leaflet is not intended to encourage, but to stop irregular intercourse or prostitution. It is only issued to married persons or to those who solemnly declare that they are about to be married, and you are asked to see that it does not get into the hands of young unmarried people. The real object of the information is to enable young people to marry before temptation becomes too strong for them, even if they cannot afford to have children. It is quite true that a general knowledge of such practices might lead some of them to gratify their impulses because the fear of results was removed — although there is no evidence that anything of the kind has yet happened. But surely it is easy for parents to train up their children to avoid such evils. Teach them in time the truth about themselves, instead of letting them get hold of false ideas in the streets and among their schoolmates. Let them learn to respect and reverence their bodies instead of regarding them as something to be ashamed of. Let them feel that sex union is a sacred thing, which should be kept for the time when they have formed a true and lasting love. When your sons and daughters come to be really in love, encourage them to marry early and give them this information, so that they can wait for their children until they are ready to welcome and provide properly for them. In this way you will do more than all the clergy and social reformers have ever done towards getting rid of immorality. TWO IMPORTANT BOOKS TO READ. WHAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW. By MARGARET H.
