Summary:1942-04 1942 1940s 44 pages delivered in an upward jet, as commonly used in public drinking fountains. This is much less wasteful and does away with the chance of spreading infection from one person to another by the use of the same mug. This may sound fussy, but it is a real risk, all the same. 2. FOOD, CLOTHING, AND TRANSPORT Feeding Arrangements The vitally important subject of canteens in industry has already been dealt with in detail in a pamphlet by the L.R.D. (Canteens in Industry, Workers' Pocket Series No. 5, 2d.) which should be consulted on all details of Orders, food supplies, and so on. Under the Factories (Canteens) Order, 1940, a factory on Government work employing 250 or more people way be directed by a Factory Inspector to arrange for a canteen in or near the factory capable of providing hot meals. At present employers in factories with less than 250 workers are not compelled to provide canteens. In such cases it will be advisable for the trade unionists and stewards in a number of neighbouring small works to make a united demand for a joint canteen, or to approach the local Food Office to set up a communal feeding centre. In any firm which is scheduled under the Essential Work Order, even if it is a small one, a canteen can be demanded as part of the "adequate welfare facilities" which the firm is bound under the Order to provide. A good hot meal at a reasonable price during the working shift is a basic health necessity for workers to-day, with all the difficulties now existing for domestic catering and with the entry of so many women into industry. Any energy expended in achieving this is certain to be reflected in production. The meal must be of high nutritional value, attractively served and eaten in comfort. Good meals that have to be rushed and eaten in sordid surroundings are likely to cause "bellyache" and be only partially digested. Even where canteens have been set up, many of them lack the space and equipment to provide a hot meal for all the workers, and many are not open during the night shift. Whether the canteen be run by the Welfare Department or by a specially appointed manager or mangeress, or workers' committee, it is important that facilities be given for criticism and suggestions by the organized workers. Any case of inadequate supplies of food should immediately be taken up with the local Food Office and Government depart- 10 21/2049
