Description
Summary:1932 1932 1930s 86 pages : illustrations DEVONIAN ASSOCIATION FOR CRIPPLES' AID In presenting this report of work for the welfare of cripples, mention must be made of the loss which the nation and the world have sustained in the lamented death of Sir Robert Jones, the greatest of all orthopaedic surgeons, to whose genius and inspiration schemes like this one owe their existence. Sir Robert took a keen interest in D.A.C.A. from its inception, and was the principal speaker at the public meeting in Exeter which launched it. He was present at the opening of the Hospital and visited it on more than one occasion afterwards. All who met him remember the sense of encouragement and enthusiasm which his personality inspired. The year 1932, the fifth complete year of D.A.C.A.'s existence, has been one of increased activity and development in practically all directions. In the first place there has been an enlargement of the Association's area, which now includes the whole of Devonshire (with the exception of the County Borough of Plymouth) and North-West Cornwall down to Tintagel. It was found that this Cornish district could, for geographical reasons, be more conveniently served from Exeter than anywhere else, and a Clinic was accordingly opened at Launceston, with a District Committee of which Mrs. Williams has kindly consented to become Chairman. From the start this Committee has show itself imbued with a constructive enthusiasm which has proved a great asset to D.A.C.A., and the ready co-operation of the Cornwall County Authorities with the Association's work is also gratefully recognised. In Devon itself an agreement arrived at between D.A.C.A., the County Council, the Trustees of Dame Hannah Rogers Hospital, Ivybridge, and Mr. Kennedy, F.R.C.S., Surgeon to that Hospital, has resulted in a re-arrangement of the orthopædic services in South-West Devon. The Clinics hitherto run by the County Council at Tavistock and Ivybridge have been replaced by one (known as the South-Western Clinic) set up under D.A.C.A. at Plymouth to serve the district adjoining that city, while the County Council has now handed over to D.A.C.A. the administration of its remaining Clinic at Kingsbridge, of which Mr. Kennedy has kindly consented to remain Surgeon-in-Charge. The establishment of a District Committee in connection with the Kingsbridge Clinic was delayed by the difficulty of finding a Chairman, but Lady Seale has now most kindly consented to serve in this 2 292/841.51/2/2
