MENTAL HOSPITALS UNDER THE METROPOLITAN ASYLUMS BOARD. There are six mental hospitals under the M.A.B. Probationers are admitted at 19, and the course of training for the examination of the Medico-Psychological Association or the State certificate is three years. The nursing staff below the ranks of "inspector" and "superintendent nurse" work a 50-hour week made up of five days or nights of twelve hours, less two hours a day for meals (i.e., two days off-duty weekly). They receive two weeks' annual leave. The nursing staff is subject to the provisions of the Asylum Officers Superannuation Act of 1909, which entitles the nurse to retire on pension at 55 years of age (provided he or she has not less than 20 years' service). A nurse permanently incapacitated for duty may be superannuated after ten years' service. DISTRICT NURSING. QUEEN'S NURSES. The majority of district nursing associations are affiliated to Queen Victoria's Jubilee Institute for Nurses. This organisation had affiliated altogether the following number of nursing associations in 1925: — England 647 Scotland 400 Ireland 148 Wales 91 Total 1,286 The total number of nurses on December 31st, 1925, in connection with the institute, including Queen's nurses and those in training, village nurses and midwives, was: — England 4,736 Scotland 807 Ireland 197 Wales 384 Total 6,124 126/TG/RES/X/1036A/14
