Description
Summary:1939-05 1939 1930s 50 pages : illustrations HINTS FOR THE BUSY HOUSEWIFE Stockings. — Wash both sides well by squeezing gently in lukewarm lather as described on the previous page. Rinse thoroughly and hang up by the toes to dry. Do not iron. Blankets. — These should be washed by squeezing in lukewarm suds made from thoroughly dissolved soap flakes or soap powder. This product will enable the blankets to retain their colour and fluffiness. Rinse thoroughly, fold and wring carefully, do not twist out of shape. Eiderdowns. — Shake or gently vacuum these free of dust. Wash as for woollens, using a rich soap lather. If colour is likely to run, use tepid water. Rinse in warm or tepid water. Rinse thoroughly — this is very important. If possible put through a wringer. Anyhow, get as much moisture out as you can. Dry in a wind, shaking often while drying to make soft and fluffy once more. Lace, Georgette, Chiffon, Silk. — All delicate fabrics require very careful washing to prevent damage to colours and to the texture and finish of the material. They may be washed with advantage in a soapless washing powder specially prepared for the purpose. The lukewarm suds should be squeezed gently through the fabric, followed by thorough rinsing, and rolling in a towel. When nearly dry press fabrics with a warm iron. Corsets. — Use a nail-brush and a hot soap lather. Rinse well and dry quickly. Lace curtains. — Shake well to get dust out, and wash in a good warm soap lather. Do not rub soap on. Squeeze and knead in the lather. Wash in a second lather if very dirty. Rinse first in warm and then in cold water. Page Twenty-nine 177/5/8/1
