May 6 Letter from National Joint Committee for Spanish relief, enclosing copy of a letter addressed to Baldwin on the question of the evacuation to this country of Basque children. May 14 Cable from Leah Manning appealing for intervention with authorities to secure permission for Basque children to be brought to England. May 24 Letter to Mayor of Wednesbury giving information re the Basque children, and stating that any assistance which could be rendered, either by collection of funds or by the acceptance of responsibility for a number of children to be cared for locally in a single establishment, would be welcomed. May 27 Letter from C.W.S. intimating that the Directors had agreed to supply goods to the value of £250 for the children. June 1. Enquiry from Bristol Trades Council for information regarding the "adoption" of a number of children. Stated that Bristol was thinking in terms of assisting 100 children. June 3 Similar request from Edinburgh. June 5 Similar request from Sheffield. June 7 Letter to Boot & Shoe Ops. expressing appreciation for gift of boots and shoes supplied to Basque children. Letter in similar terms addressed to Rossendale Union of Boot, Shoe and Slipper Ops. June 14 Letter to W.E.A. re the possibility of their assisting in the education of the children, and pointing out the difficulties involved therein. Informed W.E.A. that their letter would be forwarded to the Nat. Committee for the Care of the Basque Children. July 9 Letter from Eleanor F. Rathbone, M.P., enclosing letter addressed to "various newspapers", and headed "The Refugee Question at Santander: British Responsibility for an impending Disaster". 292/946/37/1
