Description
Summary:1949-04-04 038-0007-003 NATIONAL JOINT COMMITTEE FOR SPANISH RELIEF AND BASQUE CHILDREN'S TRUST LTD. PRESIDENT: THE DUCHESS OF ATHOLL, D.B.E., D.C.L. CHAIRMAN: THE LADY LAYTON VICE-CHAIRMAN: THE EARL OF LISTOWEL. HON. TREASURER: VISCOUNT CECIL OF CHELWOOD, P.C. K.C. HON. SECRETARIES: Mr. D.R. GRENFELL, M.P. Mr. WILFRID ROBERTS, M.P. HON. APPEAL SECRETARY: Mrs. V.E. MILLER MOORE, M.B.E. SECRETARY: MISS M. PICKEN. 39, VICTORIA STREET, LONDON, S.W.1. TELEPHONE: ABBEY 7463 -2- the War Office to apply for their families to join them. Mr. Volto has done some excellent liason work with the War Office in re-uniting the families, which often entailed meeting them on arrival, finding temporary lodgings, and helping them to solve some of the various problems of registration, employment, accommodation etc., There are still Spanish Republicans arriving from Spain and France, and these find their way to the office to obtain help and advice. Mr. Volto has been known to the Committee since his arrival here in 1939, and with the exception of three years voluntary Auxiliary War Service, has been on the staff. The Committee naturally feels that it would be a misfortune if this work should completely fall to the ground when it disbands. Knowing that the Trade Union Movement in this country has always given such generous support both locally and nationally to Republican Spaniards the Committee thought it advisable to consult with you as to any possibility of the Trade Union Movement carrying on this work, and setting up some Committee to do so. Mr. Volto is leaving us in three months time. If the Trade Union Movement considered taking up this matter they might perhaps desire to use his services in some way. Mr. Denis [Healey] Heeley knows him personally and could give you any further information about him you required. 292/946/38/7(III)
