Description
Summary:037-0185-001 WMC/KMS/484. Secretary's. PERSONAL. 5th May, 1937. Mr. Francis Williams, "Daily Herald", 12, Wilson Street, W.C.2. Dear Mr. Williams, EVACUATION OF BASQUE CHILDREN. I was very disappointed at the show we were given this morning in the "Daily Herald", over our appeal, "Save the Basque Children". Your Mr. Jay came down here specially, and I spent nearly an hour wilth him, trying to explain what the Labour Movement was doing and proposed to do in respect of the help for Spain generally, and the Basques in particular. I know that he got the interview down very fully, and I expected that in this morning's paper you would have given it some prominent heading, which would focus the public's attention on the appeal we were making for further funds. Instead of that the interview is crowded down, and many material matters are left out completely. I know that our General Council will feel as I do as both they and the National Council of Labour, at which you were present, were keen that an interview on this subject should be given prominence in the "Herald". Yours sincerely, General Secretary. P.S. I enclose draft of circular we are sending out to our unions, and Labour Parties and Trades Councils on this. The wording may be slightly altered eventually, but it will remain practically as it is in substance. If you can give the appeal a boost in the "Herald", please do so. W.M.C. 292/946/37/185
