Description
Summary:039-0100-001 BASQUE CHILDREN'S COMMITTEE Chairman: DUCHESS OF ATHOLL Secretary: MISS BETTY L. ARNE Vice-Chairmen: MISS ELEANOR RATHBONE, M P. H.V. TEWSON, ESQ. Hon. Secretary: WILFRID ROBERTS, ESQ., M P. 53, MARSHAM STREET, S.W.1. (VICTORIA 2168/9) A STATEMENT OF POLICY In view or the heavy responsibility involved in the care of the Basque refugee children now in this country, a special Basque Children's Committee has been formed, consisting of representatives of the National Joint Committee for Spanish Relief, the Archbishop of Westminster, the Trades Union Congress the society of Friends, the Save the Children Fund, the Spanish Medical Aid Committee and the Salvation Army. The Committee has established a fund of its own and is entirely dependent on voluntary contributions. The Basque Children's Committee is the temporary guardian of the Basque refugee children while in this country, on behalf of their parents or guardians. The Committee's duty is to care for and educate them and to arrange for their religious instruction in such a way as their parents would individually wish. It hopes to reunite them with their parents, or those entitled to speak for them, at as early a date as may prove possible. 292/946/39/100
