NCL 1 1937-38 APPENDIX I Statement issued by International Federation of Trade Unions and the Labour and Socialist International. GIJON HAS FALLEN! The troops of Mussolini and Hitler, thanks to aeroplanes, tanks and other material of war, have at last overcome the heroic resistance of the Asturian miners, who have shown to what a level the ardent love of liberty and of Socialism can raise human courage. The Fascist aggressors have thus won another victory at the very moment when the dictatorships were cynically affirming in London their "genuine" desire for non-intervention. Doubtless they will again unrestrainedly celebrate this success for their arms and their diplomacy. Will not the democratic powers at last open their eyes to the tragic reality? Will they not at last realise their duty to Spain, towards which precise duties are laid down in Article 10 of the Covenant; to themselves, since the Fascist victories seriously threaten their security; and to the whole of humanity, which they can still save from the horrors of a world war. In the future as in the past, our Internationals will do everything in their power to make a reality out of collective security. To-day they have an urgent task to perform - tens of thousands of men, women and children are exposed to the most terrible massacre; these lives must be saved. The Powers must, without delay, help in the evacuation of the population, giving the assistance of their shipping to this humanitarian work. The organisations affiliated to our Internationals must immediately make the necessary representations to their governments. They must arouse public opinion! The people of Asturias must be saved! The freedom of Spain must be saved! The peace of the world must be saved! (signed) WALTER CITRINE. W. SCHEVENELS. L. de BROUCKERE. F. ADLER.
