Description
Summary:017a-0061-001 NATIONAL COUNCIL OF LABOUR TRANSPORT HOUSE, SMITH SQUARE, LONDON, S.W1 TRADES UNION CONGRESS Secretary: SIR WALTER M. CITRINE (Victoria 9020) THE LABOUR PARTY Secretary: J.S. MIDDLETON (Victoria 9434) PARLIAMENTARY LABOUR PARTY Secretary: H. SCOTT LINDSAY (Whitehall 6240) Circ No.111 May 2nd, 1938. SAVE SPAIN: Dear Secretary, All reports this morning show that Labour's May-Day Celebrations yesterday were the largest and most successful for a great many years. It appears that the appeal of the National Council of Labour to various sections of the Movement to give special prominence to the Cause of our Spanish Comrades was in harmony with the general view, and from all our Platforms the support of Labour for Spanish Democracy was made abundantly clear. The need of our Spanish comrades, however, remains very urgent indeed, and we ask all sections of the Movement to join in making the week-end, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, MAY 21st and 22nd a period of SPECIAL HELP FOR SPAIN! Constituency and Local Parties, Trades Councils, Trade Union Branches, Women's Sections, and Youth Sections, are all urged to join in making a supreme effort for Spain on this occasion. A National Demonstration is to be held in the Albert Hall on the evening of May 22nd, and the National Council appeals for other meetings to be organised in every other centre throughout the country. The Head Office of the Party will book speakers to the utmost limit of availability; but, as it is clearly impossible to supply prominent speakers to all districts, Parties and Councils are urged to co-operate in arranging the best and strongest local Platform their Movement can provide. In a few days a Report will be issued giving details of the support that has been rendered to Spain through the "International Solidarity Fund" and the "Milk for Spain Fund". We appeal for Special Collections for Spain to be made on May 21st and 22nd. Miniature Spanish Republican Flags for local sale will shortly be available. These may be adapted for "Flag Days" (fixed on either May 21st or May 22nd), or for door-to-door sale, or for sale at Demonstrations or Public Meetings, or in any other way that local circumstances may determine. Secretaries of Constituency Parties and Trades Councils, are requested to take immediate steps to consult their local Officers and Committees on this urgent effort. This Appeal is being issued to all other local sections of the Movement, and their Secretaries are urged to get into the earliest possible contact with their Constituency or Local Parties in order to render the fullest possible co-operation. On behalf of the National Council of Labour, Yours very sincerely, W.M. CITRINE J.S. MIDDLETON H.S. LINDSAY Joint Secretaries. 292/946/17a/61
