CHILDREN OF THE NEW SPAIN NEED MILK This girl recited a poem about the air-raid in her street in Madrid for Mr. Attlee. Baby is wondering if Big Brother will get there before supplies run out. Children's tummies cannot wait till the war is won. Thousands of refugee children whose fathers are dead or fighting for freedom must be kept alive to build the New Spain their fathers are fighting to defend. In Madrid there are less than a thousand gallons a day for over a million people. In Catalonia a million refugees face starvation and the diseases which exposure and malnutrition bring. Their only crime is their devotion to democracy. We are not allowed to send even anti-aircraft guns — the barest protection of open towns bombed by the planes the Fascist powers have sent to Franco. But we can send food and defeat the pirates' attempt to starve out our magnificent Spanish Comrades. All Socialists and Co-operators will give all they can. We watched these lads marching off to the Front - soldiers of Europe's newest army. "Are we downhearted?" In Madrid where the Line goes through the Royal Palace.
