January 28 UGT (Spain) announce that they have sent 1,000 copies of a poster, and asking us to give the maximum publicity possible to them. He was informed (February 3) that a suitable English wording was being over-printed, and they were being distributed as widely as possible. February 2 IFTU: report from Schevenels on visit to Spain, suggesting there were strong reasons for the establishment of a base hospital near the Madrid front, and mentioning the question of a large international Conference (on the latter, Caballero could not be convinced that Communist participation in such a conference would do more harm than good, but Schevenels had more success with Tomas. A meeting of officers of the two Internationals, and the I.S.F. Management Committee would be held on February 8, in Brussels. On February 3, the IFTU was informed that W.M.C. could not attend Brussels meeting, and the wisdom of another international Conference, and the practical results accruing. February 5 Irish Labour Party ask for information about delegation to Archbishop of Westminster concerning attitude of Catholic Church to T.U. Movement. J.S. Middleton replying (notified February 11). February 9 IFTU ask for two copies of all posters and other propaganda material issued by IFTU's affiliated organisation on behalf of Spain. Sent February 10. February 4 The T.U. Delegation to Spain Committee asked for interview with Sir Walter Citrine to place before him suggestions as to how best the T.U. Movement can assist Spain. On February 10, this body was asked, to assist in giving further consideration to question of interview, to indicate in writing the proposals which the deputation had in mind. On February 17, the Committee stated that the main proposal was one affecting transport, which A.F.Papworth, a member of the Delegation to Spain, had outlined to Ernest Bevin, and that they desired to convey "the many messages of support from the Spanish workers." On February 22, the Committee was informed that no useful purpose would be served in receiving deputation, and that nothing could be added to what Mr. Bevin had said on the proposal concerning transport. February 13 IFTU announce meeting of Executive with LSI Bureau, to which representatives of Spanish Socialist Party and Spanish U.G.T. would be invited, Paris, February 17. February 17 From Professor G.E.G.Catlin, enclosing copies of letters to IFTU and Léon Blum concerning his proposal for the establishment of a Commission comparable to the two Hoover Commissions and the Nansen and William McDonald Commissions, recognised by the League and having American co-operation. Ernest Bevin sends information concerning orders placed in England for boots (25,000 pairs) for Franco.
